International Year of the Salmon 2019
The International Year of the Salmon 2019
The International Year of the Salmon (IYS) was an initiative by the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) and the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC). The focal year of the IYS was 2019, with activities continuing into 2022.
Through outreach and research activities the IYS aimed to create awareness and foster understanding of the issues facing wild salmon and their impact on the communities that benefit from the resource. Collective efforts around the Northern Hemisphere ensured a new generation of policy makers, managers and scientists are better equipped to manage and conserve wild salmon rationally by building resilience for salmon and people.
The dedicated IYS Website has full information about the International Year of the Salmon, and details of projects and activities that took place throughtout the year.
Sir David Attenborough narrated a video to celebrate the International Year of the Salmon.
The State of North Atlantic Salmon Report
In December 2019, the State of North Atlantic Salmon Report was published. This includes a powerful foreword by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. It highlights the unique lifecycle of the salmon, provides information on salmon abundance, the pressures it faces, and gives examples of how these pressures are being addressed. The report shows that wild Atlantic salmon provide society with a host of values, benefits and ecosystem services.
The IYS Symposium
A two-day Symposium was held in June 2019, hosted by Norway in Tromsø as part of the IYS. The Symposium was structured under two main themes: Climate change and state of the salmon, with scientific overviews being provided on these subjects; and management challenges and solutions. A total of 165 delegates attended the Symposium, where 26 presentations were delivered and 21 posters displayed. The Report of the Symposium, including a report and recommendations from the Steering Committee, has been published.
